December 21, 1942 - June 21, 2026.

Maryann “Mary” Eurek was born on December 21, 1942 in Ord, Nebraska. She grew up on a sunlit farm in the Sandhills of Nebraska, where she graciously tended to chores, cared for animals (especially ducks), and helped raise her siblings. Her parents instilled strength in her that sustained for 83 wonderful years.

She met James Eurek while polka dancing, and shortly after, he proposed on the eve of her high school graduation. They married in Ericson, NE on April 28, 1962. Together they welcomed three beautiful daughters: Lori Ann, Lisa Ann, and Jamie Lea. When Jim was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, Mary became his devout caregiver — a font of true, unconditional love.

Mary worked as a receptionist, then at Safeway alongside her husband for many years. She devoted 25 years to Centris Federal Credit Union before retiring in 2008.

Mary welcomed three grandchildren: Madison Lisa, Megan Kay, and Joseph James. Granny and Papa’s house became a second home filled with laughter, learning, and play. Creating a deeply cohesive family unit, Mary and Jamie became joint caregivers for Jim and the children. For 25 years, Maryann was an ever-present and ever-adoring grandmother who doted on her family at every opportunity.

Mary enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, sewing, canning, dancing, and listening to polka music. Maryann was a devout Catholic who attended Mass religiously, always keeping family and friends in her prayers.

Mary peacefully departed from this life wrapped in her family’s arms and surrounded by the same love she poured onto others. Her memory and legacy of strength will live on in the lives of all who knew her. In the words of Merrit Malloy, “when all that’s left of me is love, give me away.”

Mary is preceded in death by the love of her life of 52 years, her husband, James “Jim” Eurek; mother, Julia Sydzyik; father, Anton Sydzyik; daughter, Lisa Ann Eurek; and grandson, Trevor James Eurek. She is survived by her daughters, Jamie Lea (Scott) Streiff and Lori Ann (Ernie) Lara; her three pride and joy grandchildren; Madison Lisa, Megan Kay, & Joseph James; and nine siblings: Anthony, Veronica, Juliana, Henry, Andrew, Philip, Lawrence, Gary, and Iva. She is also survived by many beloved nephews, nieces, cousins, and special friends, especially Dorothy Harding and Pat Weaver.

The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the hospice team at CHI Health, including DeDe and Tracey, who brightened Maryann’s final two years, and to all the St. James volunteers that devoted every Sunday morning to come give her communion.

Visitation begins at 2:00 PM followed by a Funeral Mass at 3:00 PM on Friday, June 26, 2026, at St. James Catholic Church.

A Celebration of Life dinner will follow at 4:30-6:00 PM in the St. James Parish Center.

April 11, 1941 - December 29, 2025

John M. Stopak passed away on December 29, 2025, leaving behind a lifetime of memories. Born on April 11, 1941, John lived a full and meaningful life grounded in family, hard work, and the simple pleasures that brought him joy. He was preceded in death by his parents (Helene and Edward Stopak) and five brothers (Richard Stopak, Edward Stopak, Jerry Stopak, Alfred Stopak, and Louis Stopak) and one sister (Patricia Kush).

He shared 60 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Janet. He was a devoted father to his son, Scott Stopak, and Scott’s wife, Michelle, and to his daughter, Staci Vacek, and her husband, Neil. John was a proud and loving grandfather to Savanna, Scout, and Presley.

For more than 50 years, John called Silver Creek, Nebraska home. In 2020, he and Janet moved to Omaha, where they settled into a place especially close to family, living just across the street from their son and daughter. Being nearby allowed John, as he faced Parkinson’s disease, to share everyday moments with his family.

John proudly served his country as a veteran of the United States Army, a service he carried with quiet pride throughout his life. He went on to work as a Construction Superintendent; a role perfectly suited to his talents. John could build almost anything, using patience and skill both on the job and at home, including a cherished backyard playhouse.

John was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved the outdoors. Some of his happiest moments were spent in the woods or by the water. He loved visiting the casino, relaxing with a red beer, and listening to polka music — often bringing a smile, a tap of the foot, or a fond memory along with it.

His loving family includes: sister (Joann Kelly, and her husband, Dennis Kelly), sisters-in-law (Patricia Stopak and Phyllis Stopak) and husbands (Shari and David Jones, Nancy and Larry Heiden, Judy and Keith Schademann), numerous nieces and nephews.

June 21, 1943-February 11, 2026

Joseph Daniel "Joe" Anthofer, 82, of Omaha, Nebraska, passed away on February 11, 2026. Joe was born on June 21, 1943, in Stratton, Colorado, to Mary and Joseph Anthofer. He grew up in Stratton and graduated from Stratton High School before moving to Omaha where he attended and graduated from Creighton University and Creighton University School of Law.

After receiving his law degree, Joe joined the US Army where he proudly served for two years and was based in Panama for much of this time. After moving back to Omaha, he met the love of his life, Patricia Treblik. Joe and Pat were married on July 8, 1973, and soon after, he began a 30-year career as a corporate attorney with Union Pacific Railroad.

Joe and Pat were blessed with three children—Brad, Mike, and Kathleen. Joe dedicated much of his early years in Omaha to supporting his children’s many activities, whether cheering from the sidelines or stepping in as a coach. His family was always at the center of his life.

Joe retired from Union Pacific in 1998, embracing a well deserved next chapter filled with travel, hobbies, and the freedom to enjoy the things he loved most. He and Pat especially treasured their many trips to Arizona, where they visited friends and family and soaked in the warm desert winters. Joe also cherished time spent outdoors, and he rarely passed up a chance to cast a fishing line into the water. He also loved spending his time outside enjoying the weather on the porch, grilling, and listening to his favorite music.

One of the greatest joys of Joe’s retirement was becoming a grandfather. He adored his ten grandchildren—Tyler, Leah, Makenna, Cole, Sara, Kylah, Carter, Hayley, Fulton, and Caden—and attended as many of their activities and sporting events as his health allowed. His pride in them was immeasurable.

April 17, 1932  -  December 6, 2025

Barbara Ann Schonlau Lokke, was born April 17th 1932 in Omaha, Nebraska. Her elementary school education was at Blessed Sacrament, and she graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1950. Not long after that, she met Henry John Lokke. The two were married in 1954, shortly before Henry’s completion of service in the U.S. Army. Together they raised three children, John Frederick, 1956, Marilyn Marie, 1959, and Eric Francis, 1962.

Barbara was a devoted and enthusiastic gardener. As the children grew into adulthood, Barbara’s interests in her community and city burgeoned. She developed a deep interest in the history of Omaha, a pursuit that led to her serving as a docent at the General Crook House, at Fort Omaha in Florence. Barbara became a well-known tour guide working for Allied Tours as a Step-On Guide, based out of the Omaha Visitor’s Center in downtown Omaha. She developed an extensive collection of printed paper artifacts, postcards, notices, and other artifacts of Omaha, related to historic people, places, and events.

Beyond Omaha, and with Henry often joining her, were memberships and involvement with the Sons of Norway, the Isaak Walton League, Minnesota Transplants, Questers, and the Victorian Society. Barbara was a lifelong Catholic, with a deep, unwavering conviction and devotion that led to her serving as an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist at St. James Catholic Church as part of her 40-plus year attendance and involvement there. She is remembered as a ready, capable and eager Bridge player, her prowess at the game renowned everywhere she played. From her humble beginnings in north Omaha, through her presence and participation in church, travels, and interests, and contributions to the above-mentioned groups and activities, Barbara made friends everywhere she went. She gave to all she met a gentle love, undivided attention, with kind words and thoughts for all those around her. Every one of us is fortunate to carry a bit of Barbara in our hearts and souls, and Omaha is a better city for her having graced its streets, structures, and prominences, and citizens.

June 4, 1943 - October 1, 2025

Diane Elizabeth Vlasek was born on June 4th, 1943 in Omaha Nebraska to her parents Leo and Lucille (Kalinski) Daskiewicz. She graduated from Benson High School in 1961. Diane was a proud housewife and homemaker, who spent several years of her life dedicated to serving others. She worked at Stephenson School Supply and was also a receptionist at the Nebraska Humane Society.

Diane loved to cross stitch, making everything from blankets to individualized Christmas stockings for family members. She also liked to garden and make homemade Polish pickles-the REAL Vlasek pickles (Vlasic but better!).

Diane loved to travel, attending Navy reunions with her husband, Eddie, watching the Huskers, and the Green Bay Packers. She would always remind people that she was a proud owner of the Packers- she had two shares in their stock.

Diane was active in the theater community, spending several years helping backstage at both the St. James/St. Elizabeth Ann Melodrama and the Omaha Press Club Shows. She volunteered doing odd jobs at St. James, was a proud leader of the Girl Scouts, and loved to socialize.

Diane used to love being the hostess of huge neighborhood Christmas parties, packing her home full of as many people that could fit. The neighborhood Christmas party was standing room only- aside from one year, when one priest sat on the floor in the corner, claiming it was the safest place to be!

Diane loved her friends, and she very much loved her family. She and her husband, Eddie, just celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on September 5th, sharing cupcakes together to commemorate the day.

Diane passed away on October 1st, 2025.

She is survived by her husband, Eddie John Vlasek, daughter Suzanne (Dan) Anderson, son Scott (Karisa) Vlasek, sister Linda (Ron) Krueger, grandchildren Christopher and Jessica Anderson, Izabella Vlasek, 3 nieces, and other beloved family and friends.

April 28, 1929 – August 23, 2025

James Merlin “Jim” O’Donnell, longtime Omaha resident and retired Director of Pharmacy Services at Children’s Memorial Hospital, passed away at the age of 96.

Born April 28, 1929, in Omaha, Jim attended St. Philip Neri Grade School and Creighton Prep before earning his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from Creighton University in 1951. That same year, he married Rose Ann Anania, beginning a marriage of more than seven decades rooted in faith, love, and teamwork. Together they raised five children: Barbara Semerad (Dave),  Karen Lowe (Tim), Timothy O’Donnell, Deborah Neary (Joseph), and Gregory O’Donnell, M.D.

Jim began his career as a pharmaceutical representative with Eli Lilly & Co. before moving into community pharmacy practice in Iowa and Omaha. Jim started and owned “O’Donnell Drugs” drugstore, located in the Blondo Plaza, from 1962-1967. In 1967, he transitioned to hospital pharmacy, first at Clarkson Hospital and later at Children’s Memorial Hospital, where he served as Director of Pharmacy from 1970 to 1995. Under his leadership, the pharmacy department became a national model for innovation in pediatric drug therapy—introducing new concepts in nutrition, IV drug delivery, computerization, and safety standards. He also established one of the nation’s first joint Pediatric Drug Information Services in collaboration with Creighton University and served as Director of the Mid-Plains Poison Control Center.

An educator at heart, Jim held teaching appointments at Creighton University School of Pharmacy and the University of Nebraska Medical Center, shaping future generations of pharmacists. His vision extended to creating a pediatric pharmacy residency program and advocating for safer medication use in children, believing strongly that “children should be treated as children, not as small adults.”

Jim’s life was not defined by titles alone but by teamwork with his beloved Rose Ann. He often said his accomplishments were theirs together—Rose Ann supporting the home front with faith and resilience while Jim advanced the profession he loved.

He was recognized as Nebraska Hospital Pharmacist of the Year in 1974, received the Creighton University Alumni Merit Award in 1991, and was awarded Lifetime Honorary Membership in the Nebraska Society of Health-System Pharmacists.

Beyond his professional life, Jim gave generously of his time in retirement—volunteering with Catholic Charities, Kiwanis, the Durham Western Heritage Museum, Pharmacists Beyond Borders, and his parish, St. James Catholic Church.

Jim will be remembered for his devotion to family, his pioneering work in pediatric pharmacy, his strong faith, and his unwavering integrity. He leaves behind a legacy of service that will live on through his 5 children, 8 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and the many lives touched by his work.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Ann; his parents, Thomas and Myrtle O’Donnell; his brother, Robert O’Donnell; and other loved ones who now welcome him home. The family is extremely grateful to Peaceful Hearts Hospice Foundation and the dedicated caregivers that supported our parents through their transitions.

Beloved husband, father, Gumpa, and friend

Steven "Steve" Fredrick Verch passed away peacefully at age 74 after a long and courageous battle with lung cancer and COPD.

Born in Rockford, Illinois, Steve grew up with a knack for fixing things and a quiet strength that would carry him through life. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War, a chapter that shaped his deep sense of duty and resilience.

After returning from service, Steve pursued his education and graduated from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1982. He went on to build a respected career with the City of Omaha, where he served as a city inspector and later as a project manager in construction. Known for his sharp eye and commitment to quality, Steve took pride in making his community a better place—one project at a time.

In 1983, he married the love of his life, Betty. Together, they built an adventurous life filled with laughter, projects, and love. They went on to raise two daughters, Megan and Rachel, passing down his values of hard work, grit, and a sharp sense of humor.

Steve had a lifelong love for the water. Boating and fishing were his happy places, and one of his proudest personal projects was rebuilding a Mark Twain boat from the ground up. Megan and Rachel will never forget the many free boat rides that came with it or the unforgettable boat ramp debacles that turned into some of their favorite family stories.

Known for his “mic drop” one-liners and dry humor, Steve’s wit was especially appreciated by his sons-in-law, Erik and Zack. In a room full of bold personalities, Steve never competed for attention—he simply waited for the perfect moment to deliver the line everyone would remember.

To his grandchildren—Isaac, Norah, and Ginny—he was lovingly known as “Gumpa.” Whether cheering on the Huskers (he never missed a game), sharing quiet jokes, or hosting spontaneous tea parties, Gumpa’s presence always brought comfort and joy.

Steve also had a gift for building and fixing just about anything. From expanding the family home in the Keystone neighborhood with a full garage to teaching his daughters “tricks of the trade,” he showed them how to tackle life’s problems head-on—and to do it right the first time.

Steve was preceded in death by his brother Al Verch, sister Sara Ermeling, brother Rob Verch, and his parents, Marie and Robert Verch.

He leaves behind a legacy of strength, love, and unforgettable humor. He will be deeply missed by his wife Betty; daughters Megan (Erik) Friedman and Rachel (Zack) Warren; grandchildren Isaac Friedman, Norah Friedman, and Ginny Warren; sisters in laws Joella Verch and Maxine Verch, and the many family and friends who had the joy of knowing him.

In honor of Steve’s life, donations can be made to local veteran organizations.

Fair winds, Gumpa. Thank you for everything you built—with your hands, your heart, and your humor.

Services will be held at St. James Catholic Church in Omaha, NE on June 26, 2025 at 10:30am. Luncheon to follow.

John J. Stevens was born on his father’s birthday, March 14, 1936, in Columbus, Nebraska, to Dr. J.E. Stevens and Ellen Noonan Stevens. He was the third oldest among his siblings: Margaret, Kathryn, Thomas, Edward, and Patricia.

John graduated from St. Bonaventure High School and, upon graduation, moved to Omaha to attend the University of Omaha, where he majored in real estate and psychology. John and his wife, Georgia, were married for 55 years. Together, they built a loving home and raised their adopted son, Scott.

John began his career at Union Pacific Railroad as a secretary and rose through the ranks to become Director of Property Management. In that role, he oversaw activities involving the railroad’s former land yards in Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah — including securing right-of-way for spur tracks, implementing curve reductions, managing microwave sites, and acquiring land in North Platte for the Bailey Classification Facility and Union Pacific’s third main line.
John was also elected Vice President of Uinta Development Company, a cattle and mineral exploration subsidiary of Union Pacific.

A licensed real estate appraiser and broker, John chose to take early retirement after 25 years with Union Pacific to work as an independent contractor and acquisition agent. He acquired oil and gas leases and right-of-way for the State of Nebraska, Douglas County, and the City of Omaha, as well as high-speed rail right-of-way in Grand Island for Burlington Northern.

John also served for 10 years as Chief Coordinating Appraiser to the Douglas County Board of Equalization and for another 10 years on the Douglas County Condemnation Board.

He loved traveling in Wyoming and named the Tetons near Jackson Hole as his favorite place. A longtime supporter of Husker football, John held season tickets for decades. He had a deep love for dogs, American & military history, and all things Irish. He and his wife, Georgia, enjoyed traveling throughout the United States to support their son Scott at Taekwondo tournaments.

John was a beloved uncle and father figure to his large family of cousins, nieces, nephews, and their children, whom he treated as his own. His warmth, generosity, and steady presence anchored generations. His spirit of generosity and love for family will live on through the lives of all he touched.

John’s departure on the anniversary of D-Day reminds us of his love and respect for military history, as he storms the gates of Heaven to be reunited with his heavenly family, whom he loved and missed every day.
